Colosseum
Colosseum construction began under the reign of Emperor Vespasian around AD 70-72. This historic site is a flat area in a low valley between the Caelian, Esquiline and Palatine hills. Then the area was densely populated by the 2nd century. Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD destroyed the place. Emperor Nero's Domus Aurea magnificent building on the site, in front of it creates an artificial lake surrounded by pavilions, gardens and porticoes. To supply water to the region, existing Aqua Claudia aqueduct a long and gigantic bronze Colossus of Nero was set up near the entrance to the Domus Aurea.
Although the Colossus was cultivated conserved, many of the Domus Aurea nemun torn down. The lake was refilled with soil as the location for the new Flavian Amphitheatre. On the former site of gladiator show other support buildings near the Domus Area. Coliseum can be interpreted as a victory monument, according to the writings found in historic sites, "the emperor Vespasian amphitheater is generally established with capital from the spoils". This is thought to refer to a large number of property seized by the Romans following their victory in the Great Jewish Revolt. The Colosseum was badly damaged by fire about the year 217, probably caused by lightning that destroyed the top level timber interior amphitheater. The damage is not fully repaired until about 240 years and has improved further in the year 250 252 or 320 and so on. In the year 443 a chance to repair the damage caused by large earthquakes. Arena still be used for contests such as the 6th century the gladiators and the last show performed around the year 435.
During the medieval period, the Coliseum had some radical changes. arena was converted into a tomb. Around 1200 families used Cambodia as a fortress, but the big earthquake in 1349 caused the south side of the outside collapsed. Most of the fallen stones are used to build palaces, churches, hospitals and other buildings elsewhere in Rome. In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV poli this building to the Passion of Christ and the way of the Cross, said the place was sanctified by the blood of Christian martyrs who perished there.Because a state of disrepair, Coliseum can not be used for large events, so many of the larger concerts have been held outside, used the building as a backdrop. The Colosseum was covered with a large tent known as velarium. Spectators protected from the sun. Tent attached to large poles on top of the Colosseum and anchored to the ground with ropes. A team of about 1,000 people are used to set up the tent.
